As manufacturing month comes to an end, we thought we would share some history about how Gear Motions has taken an active role in supplying gears to two legendary companies known for quality and performance on the open road.
For the Love of Speed & Performance
To those not intrenched in the motorcycle industry you may not know who S&S Cycle Equipment is. Routed in history and a need for speed S&S Cycle got it starts back in 1952 with a modified 1939 Knucklehead. George Smith believed so strongly that his modified Knucklehead would reach top speeds he entered his motorcycle in the races at the Chicago speedway in hopes of winning the grand prize, $1,000.
George Smith, does just that and wins race after race competing against other motorcycles and cars that can reach speeds up to 125 mph. A machinist by trade, George continues to design and manufacture parts to modify motorcycles to increase their performance and speed setting speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats year after year. Today, S&S Cycle Equipment is known as an industry leader in high-performance aftermarket motorcycle parts and utilizes the Flats as its testing ground for new parts.
Gear Motions & S&S Cycle
Like S&S Cycle, Gear Motions is routed in history and known for the manufacturing of quality and precision gears in the United States. Gear Motions relationship with S&S cycle began over 20 years ago. The relationship started with oil pump gears and grew to include cam, cam drive and circuit breaker gears for the 1936 Knucklehead through current production of the Milwaukee-Eight style engines as well as S&S Pro Stock racing engines. Gear Motions produces between 20-30 thousand parts per year for S&S cycle.
The Open Road
In 1903 Harley-Davidson got its start. Born from a dream, two-young hobby designers William s. Harley & Arthur Davison had to manufacture a motorized bicycle and as they say the rest is history. One-Hundred and Nineteen years later, Harley Davidson is one of the most recognized brands in the world, producing over 300,000 of the most well-known and popular motorcycles on the market today.
The Introduction: Gear Motions Begins Producing Parts for Harley-Davidson
In 2011, our long-standing relationship with S&S Cycle led to Harley-Davidson engaging Gear Motions to manufacture a range of components. These components include transmission, starter and oil pump gears and fly wheels for the 1954 Panhead through 2006 Twin Cam engines and transmissions.
